Calibrate Scientific Claims to Evidence

A calibrated claim memo that maps each conclusion to study design, effect size, uncertainty, and limitations so a result is not presented as stronger than its evidence.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. State each claim, its intended audience, population and context, estimand, study design, data cutoff, and the strength of language the question permits.
  2. Extract effect estimates, intervals or uncertainty, sample and missingness, multiplicity, robustness checks, and relevant negative or contradictory results.
  3. Assess confounding, measurement, selection, reporting, and design limitations, distinguishing causal, descriptive, exploratory, and hypothetical conclusions.
  4. Assign a calibrated language level such as observed, estimated, supported, suggestive, unresolved, or contradicted, and state what evidence would change it.
  5. Check primary sources, analysis code, independent replication, or qualified review where available, preserving uncertainty instead of averaging it away.
  6. Write a claim-evidence table with citations, dates, confidence, alternative explanations, limitations, and a clear boundary on what the study did not test.
  7. Return the calibrated memo, evidence, confidence rationale, unresolved risks, and review owner, and pause before using the result in a consequential decision or public claim.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • draft claim and intended audience
  • study design, data, and analysis
  • effect estimates and uncertainty
  • decision context and review threshold

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Verify the actual tools, accounts, permissions, and workspace before starting; never claim an unavailable tool, account, source, or capability.
  • Use Latch/target-workspace for private code, artifacts, live probes, or non-public data; if that access is unavailable, stop at the boundary and report the blocker rather than substituting a guess.
  • Pause for explicit approval before consequential external actions; return evidence and unresolved risks, assumptions, and any action still awaiting approval.

Done means

A checkable finish.

A claim-evidence memo calibrates every material conclusion to design, estimates, uncertainty, limitations, citations, confidence, and unresolved risks without overstating causality.

A human brake for AI.

Latch shows every command, click, and file change before it happens — so you can say yes, no, or not yet.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
