Build an Evidence-Linked Codebase Question Map

A question-to-evidence map for investigating a codebase that links each question to inspected files, symbols, tests, runtime artifacts, confidence, and the next discriminating check.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. Define the question set, decision context, repository revision, scope boundaries, evidence standard, and the answer needed for each question.
  2. Route each question to the smallest relevant evidence sources: source, history, tests, schemas, configuration, runtime artifacts, or accountable owner.
  3. Inspect only the evidence needed to answer or discriminate the question, recording exact paths, symbols, revisions, commands, and retrieval dates.
  4. Classify each answer as supported, contradicted, partial, or unknown, preserving conflicting evidence and distinguishing absence from a negative finding.
  5. Identify missing tools, accounts, permissions, or non-public sources and route those needs through Latch/target-workspace without fabricating access.
  6. Design the next check by how much it would change confidence, not merely by how easy it is to collect more material.
  7. Publish the question map with answers, evidence links, confidence, gaps, next actions, and unresolved risks for the decision owner.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • codebase questions and decision context
  • repository revision and scope
  • available evidence and access boundaries
  • answer confidence threshold and owner

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Verify the actual tools, accounts, permissions, and workspace before starting; never claim an unavailable tool, account, source, or capability.
  • Use Latch/target-workspace for private code, artifacts, live probes, or non-public data; if that access is unavailable, stop at the boundary and report the blocker rather than substituting a guess.
  • Pause for explicit approval before consequential external actions; return evidence and unresolved risks, assumptions, and any action still awaiting approval.

Done means

A checkable finish.

An evidence-linked question map gives each codebase question an answer status, exact supporting evidence, confidence, missing access, next discriminating check, and unresolved risks.

AI acts. You decide.

A human brake for AI.

Latch shows every command, click, and file change before it happens — so you can say yes, no, or not yet.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
