Design and Read Out a Product A/B Experiment
A pre-specified, instrumented experiment that can support a product decision without post-hoc metric selection or unsafe exposure.
The process
Work it in this order.
- State the decision, hypothesis, target population, intervention, control experience, expected mechanism, and risks before implementation.
- Choose one primary outcome, supporting diagnostics, and guardrail metrics; define windows, exclusions, and event semantics.
- Estimate required sample size and runtime from baseline, minimum detectable effect, variance, significance, and power assumptions; document the method.
- Validate randomization, exposure logging, sample-ratio balance, metric pipelines, and feature rollback in an internal or limited ramp.
- Run for the pre-specified duration unless a defined safety stop triggers, monitoring guardrails without repeatedly peeking and changing the decision rule.
- Analyze according to the pre-registered plan, report uncertainty and practical effect, examine diagnostics cautiously, and record ship, iterate, stop, or retest with rationale.
Bring this
Inputs the cat will ask for.
- Product decision and hypothesis
- Eligible population and baseline metrics
- Minimum meaningful effect and risk limits
- Experiment and analytics access
Router + one playbook
Route first. Choose one.
Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

Guardrails
The boundaries travel with the prompt.
- Do not expose users to material risk without review, rollback, and safety guardrails.
- Do not change primary metrics, exclusions, or stopping rules after seeing results without labeling the analysis exploratory.
- Check instrumentation and sample-ratio mismatch before interpreting outcomes.
Done means
A checkable finish.
The experiment follows a documented analysis plan, passes instrumentation and randomization checks, reaches the planned stopping condition or safety stop, and produces a decision memo with effect estimates, uncertainty, guardrails, and next action.
