Reset a Stalled Task to One Next Action

A short recovery loop that turns a stalled task into one observable next action, removes a named blocker, and schedules a realistic restart without relitigating the whole backlog.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. Name the stalled task, its intended outcome, last concrete progress, deadline, available time, and the exact point where momentum stopped.
  2. Classify the obstruction as missing information, waiting, decision avoidance, environmental friction, or capacity, then ask only the question needed to distinguish them.
  3. Rewrite the completion condition and choose one small next action that can be started and observed in the current setting.
  4. Remove or route one dependency, obtain one decision, or create one temporary workaround, without silently expanding the task or making an external commitment.
  5. Set an immediate start time, a fallback time, and a visible completion signal, with permission to stop and reassess if the assumption is wrong.
  6. Update the task record with the action, owner, date, blocker status, and any follow-up needed later, pausing before sending messages or changing shared systems.
  7. Return the reset, supporting evidence, and unresolved risks, then mark the task active only when the next action and restart condition are both clear.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • stalled task and intended outcome
  • last progress and stopping point
  • deadline and available time
  • known dependencies or pending decisions

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Verify the actual tools, accounts, permissions, and workspace before starting; never claim an unavailable tool, account, source, or capability.
  • Use Latch/target-workspace for private code, artifacts, live probes, or non-public data; if that access is unavailable, stop at the boundary and report the blocker rather than substituting a guess.
  • Pause for explicit approval before consequential external actions; return evidence and unresolved risks, assumptions, and any action still awaiting approval.

Done means

A checkable finish.

The stalled task has one concrete next action, a named blocker or workaround, a scheduled restart, a visible completion signal, and recorded unresolved risks.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
