Select a Minimal Compatible Agent Skill Stack

A compatibility-first selection of the smallest skill stack that covers the task, with explicit exclusions, overlap checks, and a rollback-safe installation plan.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. State the task outcomes, required tools and context, prohibited actions, runtime, budget, and the conditions that make a skill necessary.
  2. Map each outcome to one candidate skill, remove redundant coverage, and record why an apparently useful skill is excluded rather than adding it by default.
  3. Verify format, runtime, path, dependency, permission, network, and license compatibility against the target workspace and approved versions.
  4. Simulate discovery, load order, tool selection, and failure fallback with positive, negative, conflicting, and missing-tool cases.
  5. Compare the smallest viable stack with broader alternatives on coverage, maintenance burden, context cost, security exposure, and recoverability.
  6. Propose a staged installation and removal plan with pinned versions, approval gates, backups, and a tested rollback before any shared change.
  7. Return the selected stack, exclusions, compatibility evidence, staged plan, rollback, and unresolved risks, and pause before installation or account changes.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • task outcomes and prohibited actions
  • target runtime and workspace
  • candidate skills and version constraints
  • budget, approval, and rollback policy

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

  • Router: agent-skill-catalog-pack
  • skills/agent-skill-catalog-pack/minimal-agent-skill-stack-selection/SKILL.md

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Verify the actual tools, accounts, permissions, and workspace before starting; never claim an unavailable tool, account, source, or capability.
  • Use Latch/target-workspace for private code, artifacts, live probes, or non-public data; if that access is unavailable, stop at the boundary and report the blocker rather than substituting a guess.
  • Pause for explicit approval before consequential external actions; return evidence and unresolved risks, assumptions, and any action still awaiting approval.

Done means

A checkable finish.

A minimal compatible skill stack covers the declared outcomes, documents exclusions and versions, passes representative fallback tests, and has a reversible installation plan with evidence and unresolved risks.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
