Assess a Technology Vendor's Cybersecurity Risk

A procurement or renewal decision includes evidence-based supply-chain risks, contractual safeguards, and monitored remediation commitments.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. Classify the engagement by data sensitivity, access, connectivity, service criticality, substitutability, concentration, and downstream dependencies.
  2. Define due-diligence depth and request proportionate evidence such as architecture, independent assessments, incident history, vulnerability practices, access controls, resilience tests, SBOM capability, and subprocessor information.
  3. Validate high-impact claims against current evidence, clarify scope and exceptions, and avoid treating a questionnaire or certification as complete assurance.
  4. Assess inherent risk, control effectiveness, residual risk, and credible failure scenarios, including compromise, outage, data misuse, and supplier dependency.
  5. Document gaps with remediation commitments, owners, dates, verification evidence, and compensating controls.
  6. Set contract requirements for security, incident notification, audit rights, data handling, vulnerability disclosure, subcontractors, continuity, and secure termination with legal review.
  7. Obtain accountable risk acceptance before onboarding and schedule continuous monitoring and reassessment based on tier and material changes.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • Vendor and service description
  • Data flows and access model
  • Business criticality and risk criteria
  • Vendor evidence and proposed contract

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

  • Router: cybersecurity-pack
  • skills/cybersecurity-skills/managing-third-party-vendor-risk/SKILL.md
  • skills/cybersecurity-skills/conducting-cyber-risk-assessment-with-nist-800-30/SKILL.md

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Collect vendor information through authorized channels and honor confidentiality restrictions.
  • Do not represent the assessment as legal advice or guarantee that the vendor is secure.
  • Require explicit accountable acceptance for unresolved material risk before production access.

Done means

A checkable finish.

The vendor has a documented risk tier and residual-risk decision, material gaps have contractual or remediation treatment, and monitoring and reassessment owners are assigned.
