Design
Map a User Journey as a Lifecycle State Machine
A lifecycle state model that shows how a user or entity enters, transitions, waits, recovers, and exits a journey, with rules for every visible and invisible state.
The process
Work it in this order.
- Define the actor, journey boundary, start and end events, lifecycle entities, time horizons, and the decisions or risks the state map must expose.
- Enumerate realistic states such as discovered, eligible, pending, active, waiting, paused, error, recovered, abandoned, expired, and completed, using evidence for each.
- Define transitions with trigger, guard, timeout, actor, side effect, destination, and whether the action is reversible or externally consequential.
- Map interface, API, data, job, notification, and permission states, including empty, loading, duplicate, stale, and inaccessible conditions.
- Test edge cases, retries, cancellation, handoff, failure, and recovery, distinguishing observed behavior from intended design and documenting contradictions.
- Validate the state table or diagram with product, engineering, support, accessibility, and operations owners, then version transition rules and ownership.
- Publish the model with entry and exit criteria, evidence, assumptions, open questions, and unresolved risks, pausing before sending notifications or changing states externally.
Bring this
Inputs the cat will ask for.
- actor and journey boundary
- entry, exit, and lifecycle events
- interface, data, job, and permission states
- owners, constraints, and validation cases
Router + one playbook
Route first. Choose one.
Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

Guardrails
The boundaries travel with the prompt.
- Verify the actual tools, accounts, permissions, and workspace before starting; never claim an unavailable tool, account, source, or capability.
- Use Latch/target-workspace for private code, artifacts, live probes, or non-public data; if that access is unavailable, stop at the boundary and report the blocker rather than substituting a guess.
- Pause for explicit approval before consequential external actions; return evidence and unresolved risks, assumptions, and any action still awaiting approval.
Done means
A checkable finish.
A validated lifecycle state map defines entry and exit states, guarded transitions, retries, recovery, ownership, accessibility behavior, evidence, assumptions, and unresolved risks.
