Plan a Software Architecture Decision

A recorded architecture decision that compares options against explicit constraints, records consequences, and assigns a verification checkpoint before implementation.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. State the decision, context, affected users, architecturally significant requirements, time horizon, and who can approve the choice.
  2. Collect the relevant product, repository, reliability, security, cost, and compliance constraints, separating verified facts from assumptions and unknowns.
  3. Define at least two viable options plus doing nothing, then compare them against explicit criteria instead of selecting by familiarity.
  4. Stress-test each option for failure modes, migration effort, operational burden, reversibility, security exposure, and long-term change cost.
  5. Choose a recommendation or record a deliberate deferral, with rationale, dissent, rejected alternatives, and the conditions that would change the decision.
  6. Write the decision record with status, context, decision, consequences, evidence links, owners, and review triggers before implementation begins.
  7. Review the record with accountable owners, record approval or required conditions, and return the artifact, evidence, and unresolved risks to the requester.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • architecture decision and decision owner
  • requirements and constraints
  • current system and revision
  • available evidence and review stakeholders

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

  • Router: software-delivery-pack

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Verify the actual tools, accounts, permissions, and workspace before starting; never claim an unavailable tool, account, source, or capability.
  • Use Latch/target-workspace for private code, artifacts, live probes, or non-public data; if that access is unavailable, stop at the boundary and report the blocker rather than substituting a guess.
  • Pause for explicit approval before consequential external actions; return evidence and unresolved risks, assumptions, and any action still awaiting approval.

Done means

A checkable finish.

An approved or explicitly deferred architecture decision record contains the context, options, rationale, consequences, owners, evidence, and review triggers.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
