Establish a Security Log Management Baseline

Critical systems produce protected, searchable logs with defined ownership, retention, review, and alerting.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. Inventory critical assets, log sources, responsible owners, regulatory obligations, investigations they must support, and current collection gaps.
  2. Define required events, fields, timestamps, identity context, retention, access, privacy handling, and review frequency by source class.
  3. Configure reliable time synchronization and centralized transport with encryption, buffering, health monitoring, and least-privilege service accounts.
  4. Normalize and enrich events while preserving the original records and documenting parsing or filtering decisions.
  5. Protect log integrity and confidentiality with role-based access, immutability or tamper evidence, backups, and audited administrative changes.
  6. Implement use cases and alerts tied to threats and business risk, then tune them with representative benign and malicious test events.
  7. Measure source coverage, ingestion delay, parsing failures, storage growth, alert quality, and retrieval success; review the baseline on a schedule.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • Asset and log-source inventory
  • Retention and compliance requirements
  • Logging platform access
  • Detection priorities

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

  • Router: cybersecurity-pack
  • skills/cybersecurity-skills/performing-log-source-onboarding-in-siem/SKILL.md
  • skills/cybersecurity-skills/implementing-syslog-centralization-with-rsyslog/SKILL.md
  • skills/cybersecurity-skills/building-cloud-siem-with-sentinel/SKILL.md

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Collect only authorized telemetry and minimize unnecessary personal or secret data.
  • Restrict log access and export because logs can contain credentials, identifiers, and investigation details.
  • Do not drop or transform source records without documented approval and recoverability.

Done means

A checkable finish.

All designated critical sources report healthy, time-aligned events; retention and access controls pass checks; and representative detections and record retrieval are successfully tested.

Sources

Where this process came from.

Sources establish the workflow pattern. Reddit and community posts, where present, are treated as practitioner anecdotes rather than universal facts.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
