Audit Systems Against a Secure Configuration Baseline

Configuration drift and unsafe exceptions are identified, corrected through change control, and continuously monitored.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. Define the authorized system population, owners, approved secure baseline, applicability rules, exception process, and evidence window.
  2. Collect current configurations with read-only APIs, policy exports, or approved scanners and protect any sensitive configuration data.
  3. Normalize versions and roles, then compare actual settings with the applicable baseline and exclude only documented non-applicable checks.
  4. Validate apparent deviations with system owners and classify risk using exposure, exploitability, business impact, and compensating controls.
  5. Create remediation changes and time-bound exceptions with owners, approvals, test plans, maintenance windows, and rollback procedures.
  6. Apply approved changes in staged groups, monitor service health, and verify each setting directly after deployment.
  7. Report compliance and drift trends, retain evidence, and automate recurring checks and alerts for critical deviations.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • System inventory and owners
  • Approved baseline and applicability rules
  • Read-only configuration access
  • Change and exception policy

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

  • skills/cybersecurity-skills/hardening-windows-endpoint-with-cis-benchmark/SKILL.md

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Collect read-only evidence before making changes and use approved maintenance and rollback procedures.
  • Do not apply a generic hardening setting without testing system role and compatibility.
  • Protect exported configurations because they may expose architecture, identities, or secrets.

Done means

A checkable finish.

Every applicable check has current evidence and disposition; approved remediations are verified; and remaining deviations have accountable, expiring exceptions.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
