Upgrade a Dependency Safely
An updated dependency with reviewed release impact, reproducible lockfiles, and passing compatibility and security checks.
The process
Work it in this order.
- Inventory the direct dependency, current and target versions, package manifests, lockfiles, runtime constraints, and transitive impact.
- Read the target release notes, migration guide, and security advisories; list breaking changes that affect this codebase.
- Create a focused update branch and change the manifest and lockfile using the project's package manager rather than hand-editing generated files.
- Run install integrity, static checks, unit tests, integration tests, and any build or smoke test that exercises the dependency boundary.
- Inspect the dependency diff for unexpected packages, scripts, license changes, and version jumps; separate major upgrades when practical.
- Document migration changes and rollback instructions, request review, and merge only after required checks pass.
Bring this
Inputs the cat will ask for.
- Repository
- Dependency name and target policy or version
- Build and test commands
- Supported runtime matrix
Router + one playbook
Route first. Choose one.
Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.
- Router:
engineering-pack skills/engineering/addyosmani/incremental-implementation/SKILL.mdskills/engineering/mattpocock/tdd/SKILL.mdskills/engineering/mattpocock/code-review/SKILL.md
Guardrails
The boundaries travel with the prompt.
- Never run untrusted install scripts with production credentials present.
- Do not bundle unrelated dependency upgrades unless explicitly requested.
- Preserve and review lockfile changes; do not bypass failing compatibility tests.
Done means
A checkable finish.
The intended version is present in the resolved dependency graph, only explained dependency changes remain, required checks pass, and rollback notes are available.
