Upgrade a Dependency Safely

An updated dependency with reviewed release impact, reproducible lockfiles, and passing compatibility and security checks.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. Inventory the direct dependency, current and target versions, package manifests, lockfiles, runtime constraints, and transitive impact.
  2. Read the target release notes, migration guide, and security advisories; list breaking changes that affect this codebase.
  3. Create a focused update branch and change the manifest and lockfile using the project's package manager rather than hand-editing generated files.
  4. Run install integrity, static checks, unit tests, integration tests, and any build or smoke test that exercises the dependency boundary.
  5. Inspect the dependency diff for unexpected packages, scripts, license changes, and version jumps; separate major upgrades when practical.
  6. Document migration changes and rollback instructions, request review, and merge only after required checks pass.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • Dependency name and target policy or version
  • Build and test commands

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

  • Router: engineering-pack
  • skills/engineering/addyosmani/incremental-implementation/SKILL.md
  • skills/engineering/mattpocock/tdd/SKILL.md
  • skills/engineering/mattpocock/code-review/SKILL.md

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Never run untrusted install scripts with production credentials present.
  • Do not bundle unrelated dependency upgrades unless explicitly requested.
  • Preserve and review lockfile changes; do not bypass failing compatibility tests.

Done means

A checkable finish.

The intended version is present in the resolved dependency graph, only explained dependency changes remain, required checks pass, and rollback notes are available.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
