Prototype and Validate a Responsive Interface

A content-first interface prototype that remains usable across representative viewport sizes, input methods, and content conditions.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. Identify the primary user tasks, content hierarchy, supported device classes, browser constraints, and accessibility requirements.
  2. Start with a narrow, linear layout and semantic structure, then define flexible grids, fluid media, and intrinsic sizing before adding breakpoints.
  3. Add breakpoints where the content and controls stop working rather than copying device-model widths.
  4. Prototype critical states with short and long content, localization expansion, errors, empty data, zoom, and both pointer and keyboard input.
  5. Test representative viewport sizes and real devices when available for reflow, readable text, touch targets, focus order, performance, and orientation changes.
  6. Document responsive rules and exceptions, collect stakeholder and user feedback, revise, and provide implementation-ready states and acceptance checks.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • User journeys and content
  • Supported browser and device range
  • Brand or design-system constraints
  • Prototype tool or frontend environment

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

  • Router: design-pack
  • skills/design/emilkowalski/prototype/SKILL.md
  • skills/design/emilkowalski/mobile-native/SKILL.md
  • skills/design/ui-skills/baseline-ui/SKILL.md

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Do not design only for named device screenshots; test intermediate widths and content stress.
  • Preserve semantic order and keyboard behavior when visual order changes.
  • Do not hide essential content or actions solely to make small screens fit.

Done means

A checkable finish.

Critical tasks work at representative and intermediate widths, no essential content is lost at zoom or reflow, keyboard and touch interactions are usable, and responsive rules and tested states are documented.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
