Build a Reproducible Scientific Compute Plan

A compute plan that makes a scientific result rerunnable by pinning data, code, environment, random seeds, and hardware, then validating outputs against independent checks.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. Define the scientific claim, inputs, expected outputs, tolerances, resource limits, privacy constraints, and what a successful independent rerun must demonstrate.
  2. Acquire and version data, code, schemas, containers, and dependencies with provenance, checksums, licenses, and access records, preserving non-public inputs securely.
  3. Create an isolated environment with pinned tools, hardware details, random seeds, command lines, and deterministic settings, recording every deviation from the source.
  4. Divide the computation into restartable stages with intermediate checks, logs, and validation of units, shapes, ranges, and invariants; do not run a baseline or workload.
  5. Define isolation, storage, access, cleanup, rollback, and the smallest non-sensitive smoke test, but tabletop the plan without executing code or changing a cloud resource.
  6. Treat any execution, laboratory use, cloud use, or code run as a separately authorized phase; record the owner approval required before that phase begins.
  7. Return the versioned computation contract, provenance table, environment manifest, stage checklist, validation plan, resource estimate, rollback, unavailable dependencies, and unresolved risks without running the study.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • scientific claim and expected outputs
  • data, code, and environment provenance
  • compute, security, and privacy constraints
  • independent verification and tolerance criteria

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Verify the actual tools, accounts, permissions, and workspace before starting; never claim an unavailable tool, account, source, or capability.
  • Use Latch/target-workspace for private code, artifacts, live probes, or non-public data; if that access is unavailable, stop at the boundary and report the blocker rather than substituting a guess.
  • Pause for explicit approval before consequential external actions; return evidence and unresolved risks, assumptions, and any action still awaiting approval.

Done means

A checkable finish.

A versioned compute plan defines the computation contract, provenance, environment, restartable stages, validation checks, resource estimate, rollback, stop conditions, and unavailable dependencies without running the study or changing an external system.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
