Build a Safe Parallel Investigation Plan

A dependency-aware investigation graph that separates independent read-only questions, names safe work lanes, and defines how evidence is merged without shared-state collisions.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. Define the investigation question, scope, revision, evidence threshold, stop conditions, and questions that must remain out of scope.
  2. Break the question into bounded leaves such as history, source, tests, documentation, configuration, and runtime evidence, with an output contract for each leaf.
  3. Draw dependencies between leaves and serialize any work that shares mutable state, credentials, a target, or an output that another lane depends on.
  4. Assign each lane a named owner, workspace, allowed tools, timebox, and safe read-only or isolated-test procedure.
  5. Define merge checkpoints, provenance format, duplicate handling, contradiction rules, and the point at which a lane must stop for human direction.
  6. Run independent lanes in parallel only where their inputs and effects are isolated, then reconcile results without overwriting private or non-public evidence.
  7. Publish the graph, completed findings, blocked lanes, evidence links, next discriminating checks, and unresolved risks without presenting a partial graph as complete.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • investigation question and scope
  • repository or system revision
  • available tools and access boundaries
  • timebox and evidence requirements

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

  • Router: software-delivery-pack

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Verify the actual tools, accounts, permissions, and workspace before starting; never claim an unavailable tool, account, source, or capability.
  • Use Latch/target-workspace for private code, artifacts, live probes, or non-public data; if that access is unavailable, stop at the boundary and report the blocker rather than substituting a guess.
  • Pause for explicit approval before consequential external actions; return evidence and unresolved risks, assumptions, and any action still awaiting approval.

Done means

A checkable finish.

A dependency-aware investigation graph identifies safe parallel lanes, merge rules, blocked work, evidence provenance, and the next checks needed to answer the question.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
