Build a Low-Cognitive-Load Runbook

A short, executable runbook that reduces operator load through one purpose, a small decision tree, exact commands, verification, and a safe stop.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. Define the trigger, operator outcome, system boundary, risk level, prerequisites, and the conditions under which the runbook must stop.
  2. Write a one-screen orientation with the symptom, likely impact, first safe check, escalation path, and links to authoritative context.
  3. Break the procedure into numbered actions with one purpose per action, expected output, failure branch, and a clear handoff for unfamiliar cases.
  4. Specify safe commands, variables, access assumptions, evidence to capture, and the exact verification that proves each step worked.
  5. Test the runbook in a representative non-production environment or tabletop, marking any untested command, missing permission, or ambiguous instruction.
  6. Assign an owner, review cadence, related dashboards and alerts, and a last-tested date, then prune stale steps without losing rollback guidance.
  7. Publish the runbook and return its evidence, test status, known limitations, and unresolved risks, pausing before any production action.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • operator trigger and desired outcome
  • system and environment scope
  • access and safety constraints
  • available tests, dashboards, and owner

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Verify the actual tools, accounts, permissions, and workspace before starting; never claim an unavailable tool, account, source, or capability.
  • Use Latch/target-workspace for private code, artifacts, live probes, or non-public data; if that access is unavailable, stop at the boundary and report the blocker rather than substituting a guess.
  • Pause for explicit approval before consequential external actions; return evidence and unresolved risks, assumptions, and any action still awaiting approval.

Done means

A checkable finish.

A tested, owned runbook gives an operator a short path from trigger to verified outcome or safe escalation, with commands, stop conditions, evidence, and unresolved risks documented.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
