Validate a Feature Need Before Building It

A decision memo that tests whether a proposed feature addresses a verified user or business problem and chooses build, discover, defer, or reject.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. State the proposed capability, intended outcome, affected users, decision deadline, current alternatives, and what evidence would change the decision.
  2. Collect user behavior, support evidence, research, product data, and business context, distinguishing a stated request from an observed need.
  3. Map the need to user jobs, frequency, severity, strategic fit, constraints, and the cost of leaving the problem unresolved.
  4. Design the smallest safe discovery test, such as a prototype, concierge trial, instrumented funnel, or customer conversation, with success and stop criteria.
  5. Compare build, buy, process change, defer, and reject options on expected value, cost, reversibility, risk, and learning value.
  6. Record the decision, confidence, owner, date, assumptions, disconfirming evidence, and the follow-up test or metric that will trigger a change.
  7. Deliver the memo with evidence and unresolved risks, and pause before committing spend, exposing users, or announcing a build decision.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • feature proposal and target outcome
  • user and business evidence
  • alternatives and constraints
  • decision owner and test horizon

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

  • Router: minimal-code-pack
  • skills/minimal-code-pack/feature-necessity-decision/SKILL.md

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Verify the actual tools, accounts, permissions, and workspace before starting; never claim an unavailable tool, account, source, or capability.
  • Use Latch/target-workspace for private code, artifacts, live probes, or non-public data; if that access is unavailable, stop at the boundary and report the blocker rather than substituting a guess.
  • Pause for explicit approval before consequential external actions; return evidence and unresolved risks, assumptions, and any action still awaiting approval.

Done means

A checkable finish.

A reviewable need-validation memo recommends build, discover, defer, or reject with user evidence, alternatives, confidence, a follow-up test, and explicit unresolved risks.

AI acts. You decide.

A human brake for AI.

Latch shows every command, click, and file change before it happens — so you can say yes, no, or not yet.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
