Record and Bound Deliberate Technical Shortcuts

A bounded ledger for deliberate shortcuts that ties each compromise to an owner, trigger, containment, expiry, and verification instead of hiding it as general cleanup.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. Capture the shortcut, the decision it enabled, the date, the system boundary, the people who accepted it, and the evidence available at the time.
  2. Classify the debt as security, reliability, maintainability, compliance, cost, or delivery pressure and describe the concrete failure or cost it creates.
  3. Define containment, monitoring, workaround, data or service limit, and an observable signal that would make the shortcut unsafe.
  4. Assign an owner, review date, retirement condition, dependencies, and an acceptance path for risk that cannot yet be paid down.
  5. Trace how the shortcut affects future changes, incident response, onboarding, and compliance, then prioritize it against active risk rather than general tidiness.
  6. Schedule payoff, replacement, or explicit acceptance, and record the decision and evidence without silently converting the compromise into a requirement.
  7. Review the ledger, flag overdue or compounding items, and return current status, evidence, accepted risk, and unresolved risks to the accountable owner.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • shortcut description and rationale
  • affected service or repository
  • risk owner and acceptance authority
  • monitoring and review evidence

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Verify the actual tools, accounts, permissions, and workspace before starting; never claim an unavailable tool, account, source, or capability.
  • Use Latch/target-workspace for private code, artifacts, live probes, or non-public data; if that access is unavailable, stop at the boundary and report the blocker rather than substituting a guess.
  • Pause for explicit approval before consequential external actions; return evidence and unresolved risks, assumptions, and any action still awaiting approval.

Done means

A checkable finish.

The ledger gives every deliberate shortcut a bounded risk, containment, owner, expiry or acceptance condition, verification signal, and current evidence-backed status.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
