Pressure-Test an Agent Skill Definition

A reproducible challenge to an agent skill definition that tests trigger clarity, instruction completeness, tool assumptions, and safe fallback behavior before publication.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. Capture the exact skill file, version, source, license, frontmatter, intended trigger, non-trigger cases, and the behavior the skill promises to produce.
  2. Build a test set covering ordinary requests, ambiguous requests, out-of-scope requests, missing inputs, unavailable tools, and adversarial instructions.
  3. Inspect the definition for hidden assumptions about paths, accounts, permissions, sequencing, external actions, evidence, and output format.
  4. Run the cases in an isolated environment with a declared tool and account matrix, using Latch/target-workspace when private files or non-public evidence are required.
  5. Score each result against selection accuracy, instruction adherence, safe refusal, evidence handling, uncertainty disclosure, and usefulness of the fallback.
  6. Revise one material weakness at a time, rerun the full regression set, and inspect the diff for removed constraints or newly implied capabilities.
  7. Publish a pass, conditional pass, or fail verdict with failing cases, reproduction steps, evidence, unresolved risks, and an owner for each follow-up.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • skill definition and source version
  • intended triggers and non-triggers
  • test environment and tool matrix
  • acceptance rubric and reviewer

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Verify the actual tools, accounts, permissions, and workspace before starting; never claim an unavailable tool, account, source, or capability.
  • Use Latch/target-workspace for private code, artifacts, live probes, or non-public data; if that access is unavailable, stop at the boundary and report the blocker rather than substituting a guess.
  • Pause for explicit approval before consequential external actions; return evidence and unresolved risks, assumptions, and any action still awaiting approval.

Done means

A checkable finish.

A documented pressure-test report exercises the skill against representative and adversarial cases, records reproducible failures, and gives a defensible publication verdict with evidence and unresolved risks.

Latch shows every command, click, and file change before it happens — so you can say yes, no, or not yet.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
