Incident Response

Coordinate the First Response to Ransomware

Ransomware spread is limited, evidence and recovery options are protected, and leadership receives a coordinated response path.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. Activate the incident response plan, assign an incident commander, open an out-of-band coordination channel, and start a decision log.
  2. Isolate affected systems and network segments using approved methods; if isolation is impossible, power down only when incident leadership determines the tradeoff is justified.
  3. Protect backups and administrative systems from further access, disable compromised accounts, and block confirmed command-and-control indicators.
  4. Preserve volatile and durable evidence where feasible, identify the ransomware variant, and scope encryption, exfiltration, identity compromise, and initial access.
  5. Engage legal counsel, cyber insurer, regulators, law enforcement, and external responders according to contracts and applicable reporting duties.
  6. Select clean restore points, rebuild from trusted media, rotate exposed credentials, remediate the entry vector, and validate systems before reconnecting them.
  7. Maintain enhanced monitoring, communicate through approved spokespeople, and conduct an after-action review with tracked corrective actions.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • Incident response plan and contact roster
  • Affected assets and observed indicators
  • Backup inventory and recovery priorities
  • Legal, insurer, and reporting contacts

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

  • skills/cybersecurity-skills/investigating-ransomware-attack-artifacts/SKILL.md

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Only authorized responders may isolate, disable, rebuild, or reconnect systems.
  • Do not destroy evidence, run untrusted decryptors, or negotiate or pay without executive, legal, and law-enforcement guidance.
  • Use out-of-band communications if enterprise identity or messaging may be compromised.

Done means

A checkable finish.

Spread is stopped, scope and reporting decisions are recorded, critical services are restored from trusted sources, the intrusion path is addressed, and monitoring shows no renewed malicious activity for the agreed observation period.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.
