Build a Production-Ready Container Image

A small, reproducible, non-root container image that starts correctly and passes vulnerability and runtime checks.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. Identify the application build, runtime files, ports, health behavior, configuration boundaries, and supported target architecture.
  2. Write a multi-stage Dockerfile using a trusted, version-pinned base and a .dockerignore that excludes source noise, credentials, and local artifacts.
  3. Install dependencies reproducibly, order layers for cache efficiency, and copy only necessary runtime artifacts into the final stage.
  4. Create and switch to an unprivileged user, set an explicit entrypoint, and keep configuration and secrets outside the image.
  5. Build with Docker's checks enabled, inspect image history and size, scan vulnerabilities, and verify expected metadata and architecture.
  6. Run the image with production-like read-only or restricted settings, test startup, health, shutdown, network behavior, and a representative request.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • Application source and build command
  • Runtime and architecture targets
  • Port, health, and configuration contract
  • Approved base-image policy

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

  • skills/engineering/addyosmani/ci-cd-and-automation/SKILL.md

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Never bake credentials, private keys, or environment-specific secrets into image layers.
  • Do not run as root unless a documented requirement and compensating controls exist.
  • Do not publish an image that has not been scanned and exercised from a clean build.

Done means

A checkable finish.

A clean build produces the expected image, no secrets are present, the process runs as the intended non-root user, health and shutdown checks pass, and scan findings meet the stated policy.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
