Validate Network Segmentation Controls

The organization proves that only intended traffic can cross trust boundaries and closes unintended paths without disrupting critical services.

The process

Work it in this order.

  1. Obtain authorization and define source and destination zones, permitted flows, excluded assets, test methods, timing, safety limits, and rollback contacts.
  2. Review current diagrams, routing, firewall and cloud rules, security groups, identity-aware policies, and flow logs to derive the intended access matrix.
  3. Identify overly broad, shadowed, stale, temporary, asymmetric, or undocumented rules and validate service dependencies with owners.
  4. From approved test points, exercise allowed and denied paths using safe protocols and rates, recording source, destination, port, identity, result, and timestamp.
  5. Correlate test results with control-plane configuration and telemetry to distinguish enforcement gaps from test or routing errors.
  6. Remediate through change control, testing narrower policy in stages with monitoring and rollback readiness.
  7. Retest failed paths and representative allowed services, update diagrams and rule ownership, and schedule recurring drift checks.

Bring this

Inputs the cat will ask for.

  • Written test authorization and boundaries
  • Network and cloud diagrams
  • Intended flow matrix and service owners
  • Approved test points and maintenance window

Router + one playbook

Route first. Choose one.

Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

  • skills/cybersecurity-skills/configuring-network-segmentation-with-vlans/SKILL.md
  • skills/cybersecurity-skills/implementing-network-segmentation-with-firewall-zones/SKILL.md

Guardrails

The boundaries travel with the prompt.

  • Do not scan or generate traffic beyond named assets, protocols, rates, and times.
  • Use non-destructive connectivity tests and stop immediately on instability.
  • Change controls only with owner approval, staged rollout, and a tested rollback path.

Done means

A checkable finish.

Every critical allowed and denied flow has recorded test evidence matching policy, unintended paths are closed, required services still work, and diagrams and ownership are current.

Behind the number

Two harnesses. One line.

Same number, same $100 credit. Pick the harness that answers when you text.

Hermes

Nous Research's terminal-native agent. It runs on your machine, keeps memory between sessions, and opens one playbook per task.

OpenClaw

The open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the channels you already use. One playbook per task.
