Trace a Feature Across UI, API, Data, Jobs, and Configuration
An end-to-end trace for one feature that links user action to interface, API, domain logic, data, asynchronous jobs, configuration, and observable outcomes.
The process
Work it in this order.
- Name the feature, user or system outcome, revision, environments, entry event, and the boundary between in-scope and neighboring behavior.
- Trace the interaction from interface state and route through authentication, API validation, domain commands, queries, and data writes.
- Follow events, queues, scheduled jobs, webhooks, third-party calls, retries, and configuration or feature-flag branches to their consumers.
- Map success, failure, empty, permission, timeout, duplicate, and recovery states to user feedback, logs, metrics, traces, and audit records.
- Verify each hop with source, tests, schemas, or authorized runtime evidence, marking unknown links rather than turning a plausible path into a fact.
- Identify contracts, versioning, ownership, isolation, and failure boundaries that could break the feature when one layer changes.
- Publish the sequence diagram or trace table with source locations, evidence confidence, missing links, next checks, and unresolved risks.
Bring this
Inputs the cat will ask for.
- feature definition and user outcome
- repository revision and environments
- interface, API, data, and job boundaries
- required evidence and owner
Router + one playbook
Route first. Choose one.
Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

The boundaries travel with the prompt.
- Verify the actual tools, accounts, permissions, and workspace before starting; never claim an unavailable tool, account, source, or capability.
- Use Latch/target-workspace for private code, artifacts, live probes, or non-public data; if that access is unavailable, stop at the boundary and report the blocker rather than substituting a guess.
- Pause for explicit approval before consequential external actions; return evidence and unresolved risks, assumptions, and any action still awaiting approval.
Done means
A checkable finish.
A cross-layer feature trace links the user action through interface, API, domain, data, jobs, configuration, and observability with source evidence and explicit gaps.
