Run a Backup Restoration Drill
The organization proves that critical data and services can be restored within agreed recovery objectives from protected backups.
The process
Work it in this order.
- Select an in-scope service and define approved test boundaries, dependencies, restore point, recovery time and recovery point objectives, success criteria, roles, and rollback plan.
- Verify backup inventory, immutability or offline protections, encryption keys, credentials, documentation, software media, and required infrastructure without altering production.
- Restore into an isolated authorized environment using the documented procedure and record start time, errors, manual decisions, and dependencies.
- Validate integrity, completeness, application behavior, identity and access, security controls, and representative business transactions with data owners.
- Measure achieved recovery time and data point against objectives and confirm the restored environment contains no known malware or compromised credentials before any reconnection.
- Securely dispose of test copies according to data policy and restore the test environment to its approved state.
- Publish results, update runbooks, assign corrective actions, and schedule a retest for failed or materially changed services.
Bring this
Inputs the cat will ask for.
- Service and dependency inventory
- RTO and RPO targets
- Backup platform and isolated test environment access
- Data-owner validation criteria
Router + one playbook
Route first. Choose one.
Cat Paw loads one playbook per task rather than merging several. Start with this router; the remaining paths are workflow-specific candidates it can inspect.

Guardrails
The boundaries travel with the prompt.
- Use an isolated test environment and explicit change approval; never overwrite production during a drill.
- Protect restored sensitive data and destroy test copies under retention policy.
- Scan and validate restore sources before reconnecting systems after a real compromise.
Done means
A checkable finish.
A documented end-to-end restore passes integrity and business validation within approved objectives, or failures have owners and a scheduled retest.
